AARP Tax Prep Sign Ups

We are at that time again...
The Red book is at the desk.
There is a list of names on Page 1, these people need 2 hour appointments. They are being contacted by phone to set up their appointments.
According to the new parameters...
Early appointments are for Returning Clients only.
New clients may schedule a 1pm appointment .
Do not use the 2pm slots unless all the other slots have been filled.
What this means is that when a person calls for an appointment we need to ask if they are a new appointment or a returning appointment.
In person appointments - give them a green card.
Phone appointments - try to remind them what to bring with them.
Any questions contact Susan Hope.
Good luck!

Teen PC Issue

Hello,

Recently we have had a student using the Teen PCs (usually 1-3 along the
wall) and the Envisionware "timer" mysteriously disappears.  You will notice
the PC will say "Offline" when using the staff PC Reservation software.  I
am not sure exactly what he is doing - but he is working off of a USB drive.
Please walk up to him and inform him the PC must be rebooted (he does this
right away).  I informed him that if he is doing anything to disable our
software he won't be allowed to use the PCs.  I don't believe he is doing
anything particularly bad, other than tampering with our software (which is
expressly forbidding in the acceptable use policy) Linda is aware of the
student's name and the situation.

Please pass this on to Part-time staff.

Thanks,

Ryan

Don't I get that folder?

What's a stylus?

I get those books as a prize?

Summer Battle of the Books

Teens entering grades 6 through 9 may come in and inquire about Battle of the Books.  The informational meeting was held on Wednesday, June 1st.  Some were not able to attend the meeting and need to pick up books, calendar and information brochure.  The remaining books are in the YA area in the cabinet below the bulletin board.  Please limit to 4 books per teen.  Please give them a calendar and brochure from the yellow folder also in cabinet.  The teen should sign his/her name and the books that they took.

Charging Station

Hello,

I purchased a 6 port USB charging hub for the YA Desk.  It is able to detect the power needs of any device plugged into it.  For instance, it will output more power to charge an iPad than it would for an iPhone.

It has 3 Lightning cables (new iPhones and iPads), 1 Android cable and one 30-pin cable (Older iPads and iPhones).

Thanks,

Ryan

Updates from Department Meeting:

-The Teen's new room may be finished in early July, but opening will be later in summer.
-The last day to order books will be May 15.  Please keep to basic books, no extra peripherals.
-Glass for the new Quiet Room will be here soon, opening is expected in early June.

Also, Ryan got us the large print keyboard that Brian  requested.  It's in middle cabinet on bottom shelf.   To use, just plug into USB port and leave regular keyboard in place.

We can do better than just "googling"  if we knew how to use our databases.  So... I'm asking you to
select an online resource that you either use or think you should use. Let me know what it is and corny as it sounds we are going to teach it to each other.

As a reminder, when you have the opportunity stand up and stretch your bones regularly throughout your desk shift  to see what's happening around you.
Susan

Printer Update

I have opened a case with Envisionware to examine the speed issues on the Patron B&W printer.  They have made some setting changes for us on our server and I have physically switched the printer with the one at the Reference Desk.   By switching them, I hope to eliminate any hardware issue with the printer itself.  If you notice any slowness (page to page or hesitations especially) let me know via email.  Please include the time in which they occurred.

Thanks-

R

Overdrive App Problems Update

Overdrive updated their app on February 1st (and again on the 5th because of issues), and since then many users have experienced major issues with the app.
Depending on the error message patrons see when trying to download a book, Overdrive has suggestions as to what steps to take here: http://help.overdrive.com/customer/portal/articles/2323453

Most likely, patrons will have to deauthorize, then re-authorize the app itself.
Open Overdrive, tap the menu button in the upper left corner (the three stacked lines), go to Settings, tap Adobe ID, then deauthorize. Patrons will need to know the email address/password combo that the app was originally authorized with.

Veterans Center Books, etc...

Hi,

FYI: to make room for YA, the Veterans Center Books will be interfiled and
the newsletters will go in newspapers; Long Island and genealogy books
will be stored on shelves in hallway in lower level for easy access.
Oversized books will stay on the shelving unit, which will be moved closer
to the Reference Desk. This is all temporary, work is scheduled to take
about 3 months.

Thanks!

Overdrive App Problems

There are problems with an update Overdrive pushed out to their app on iOS devices. They know and are working to correct this issue. As a result patrons may discover that they have lost their checkouts and their reading history. It may help to uninstall and reinstall the app. SCLS will keep us updated with any notices they get from Overdrive. If there is anything SCLS can do please let me know – like returning titles so that they can check out new titles - I will submit problems through the SCLS Help Desk. Email me the particulars, most importantly patron's name and barcode #.

Remember you can always post by sending an email.

Part-timers Folders

In the bottom drawer, on the right side of the Reference Desk are now file folders for Tom, Brad, and Dave. Feel free to put things for them in there. (especially their paychecks). They will know to look there.

Reference Stats

I hope everyone has been using our Reference Statistics page to help us tally the number of questions asked at the Reference Desk.
To that, I am going to ask that you NOT check multiple boxes on the page (it has to do with how the information is tabulated after you click Submit).
This would be a great help to me. Apologies in advance for the mild inconvenience.

Thanks, Sarah

Patron Printing

Remember you can always bring up patron print jobs at the Reference Desk and move one to the RefDesk printer if there is a need. Click on the print job's printer to change the printer destination.
There is no need for a patron to re-send their job.  So while one is printing at the public printer, another could be printing at the Reference Desk. Just take payment manually.

Performance Tickets

In order to make it more convenient for the patrons, so as to not have them walk back and forth from Reference to Circulation, we will begin distributing performance tickets at the Reference Desk.
They are on top of the Reference Desk - limit 4 person, unless otherwise noted.
We are not publicizing this, we are just making it easier for patrons should they be at the Reference desk and ask.

Has anyone else had a similar experience with her?
See Brian for more details.

See Brian for any suggestions.
